When your wife abandons the marriage

Posted August 20, 2026, by Timothy

This is just a part of my story. After 53 years, I still hurt and don't understand why she ran off.

Paul teaches that a believing spouse sanctifies the household, and if an unbelieving spouse chooses to leave, the Christian is not bound to maintain the marriage, emphasizing peace and holiness.

Verse 14: The Believing Spouse Sanctifies the Household

In 1 Corinthians 7:14, Paul addresses marriages where one spouse is a believer and the other is not. He explains that the believing spouse has a sanctifying influence on the entire household, including the unbelieving partner and children. This does not automatically save the unbelieving spouse, but it creates a spiritual environment where God’s presence and influence are evident, giving the family an opportunity to respond to God’s call that the situation in Ezra 9-10, where intermarriage with non-believers was seen as a threat to holiness; in Corinth, the believer’s faith brings a positive, sanctifying effect rather than a negative one

The term “holy” here refers to being set apart for God’s purposes, highlighting the spiritual significance of a believer’s presence in the family.

Verse 15: Freedom When the Unbelieving Spouse Leaves

Verse 15 addresses the scenario where the unbelieving spouse chooses to depart. Paul instructs the Christian partner to let them leave, emphasizing that the believer is not under bondage in such cases and should prioritize peace.

This principle, sometimes called the “Pauline privilege,” allows the Christian to be free from the marital obligation if the unbelieving spouse insists on separation, especially when the marriage becomes intolerable due to conflicting religious convictions.

The focus is on maintaining peace and avoiding unnecessary conflict, while recognizing the believer’s liberty in God’s eyes.

Practical Implications

  1. Sanctifying Influence: A Christian spouse can positively impact the spiritual life of the household, encouraging faith and godly living even among non-believers.

  2. Respecting Free Will: If the unbelieving spouse leaves, the Christian is not required to force the marriage to continue but should respond with patience and peace.

  3. Peace and Holiness: Paul’s guidance balances the call to maintain marriage with the recognition that God values peace and spiritual well-being over coercion.
In summary, 1 Corinthians 7:14-15 teaches that a believer’s faith brings holiness to the family, and while marriage is generally to be preserved, God allows freedom when the unbelieving spouse chooses to depart, emphasizing peace and spiritual integrity.
