Jesus’ Warning to Disciples About Being Deceived in the Last Days
Jesus warned His disciples that in the final days, many will come in His name claiming to be the Messiah and will deceive many (Matthew 24:4–5). He said, “See to it that no one deceives you” (Luke 21:8; Matthew 24:4), using the Greek word planao, which can mean “deceived” .
Nature of the Deception
- False messiahs and prophets: Jesus foretold that “false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect” (Matthew 24:24).
- Large numbers: The Greek word polys in Matthew 24:4 means “many,” indicating a very large number of deceivers.
- Spiritual manipulation: Deception will turn people away from Christ and toward worldly or self-serving beliefs (Luke 21:8; 1 John 4:1).
When It Will Happen
- Before the tribulation: Jesus said these deceivers would appear before the tribulation period (Matthew 24:4–5).
- During the tribulation: The deception will intensify, with “great signs and wonders” used to mislead, even those who are elect (Matthew 24:24).
Jesus’ Instructions the disciples
- Guard your mind and perception — deception targets how you see things before it changes your actions.
- Stay alert — false voices will multiply, claiming, “I am He” and “The time is near” (Luke 21:8).
- Refuse to follow impostors — allegiance belongs to Christ alone (John 10:4–5).
- Anchor in truthful prophecy — Jesus’ words are certain; counterfeit timelines will come.
- Test every teaching — examine it against Scripture (Acts 17:11; 1 John 4:1).
- Stay under sound leadership — avoid being “tossed about by every wind of teaching” (Ephesians 4:14).
- Cultivate discernment through the Spirit — the Spirit will guide into all truth (John 16:13).
- Keep the gospel center— reject any “different gospel” (Galatians 1:8–9).b
Practical Safeguards Today
- Saturate your heart with Scripture — “Your word is truth” (John 17:17).
- Be skeptical of date-setting — “No one knows about that day or hour” (Matthew 24:36).
- Recognize cultural pressures — 2 Timothy 3:13 warns of evil men and impostors deceiving and being deceived.
- Hold fast in truth — Jesus forewarns because He foreknows; deception loses power when truth is treasured (John 8:32).
In summary: Jesus told His disciples to be vigilant against false messiahs, false prophets, and deceptive teachings in the last days. He urged them to guard their minds, test all teaching, and remain anchored in His truth, knowing that only those who endure in faith will escape the deception.
