What Jesus Taught Us About Fear
Jesus addressed fear directly, showing that it is a natural human emotion but one that can be transformed through trust in God. He didn’t ignore fear — he met it with calm, reassurance, and a call to faith.
1. Fear is natural, but God is greater
In the calming of the storm, Jesus rebuked the wind and waves, then asked, “Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?” This shows that even close followers of Jesus could be overwhelmed, but His presence brings peace and authority over fear.
2. The proper object of fear
Jesus taught that we should fear God — the one who holds authority over both body and soul — rather than worldly threats. In Matthew 10:28, He said, “Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell”. This is not fear of God in a terrorizing sense, but reverence for His sovereignty and righteousness.
3. God’s love and provision
In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said, “Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear” (Matthew 6:25–34). He pointed to God’s care for birds and flowers as evidence of His provision, inviting trust in His love and promises.
4. Peace as an antidote to fear
Jesus promised, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (John 14:27). This peace is deep, enduring, and rooted in the relationship with Him.
5. Letting go and focusing on the present
Jesus encouraged His disciples not to be anxious about tomorrow, reminding them that “tomorrow will be anxious for itself” (Matthew 6:34). This freedom comes from trusting God’s presence and care.
6. Examining fear as a spiritual clue
Biblical counseling notes that fear, worry, and anxiety can reveal what we truly value. Jesus often asked questions to help people see their fears in light of God’s love and authority.
In summary:
Jesus taught that fear is real but not final. By focusing on God’s love, His provision, and His peace, we can walk through life with confidence. His message is one of trust, reassurance, and spiritual courage — not the denial of fear, but the transformation of it into faith.
